For those actual humans who read this blog (or merely StumbleUpon it), you know that we here at Armada HQ are something of rabid Mountain Goat fans (the band not the animal)! So you can imagine how much we pissed ourselves with joy when our copy of the new album All Eternals Deck arrived in the mail last Thursday. Accompanied by an exclusive cassette tape containing the complete demos and two songs left off the album. Our joy and has been hard to put into words. Each TMG album brings a certain sense of “Thank God we’re not alone”, each track is like a page from a diary you forgot you wrote. I guess kids don’t write in diary’s anymore it’s all blogs and tweets, and status updates. Our favorite song so far has been High Hawk Season, which is a simple sounding song with a barber-shop quartet, JD, and his superb guitar skills. The Autopsy Garland is equally mind-blowing. The album’s theme doesn’t follow a specific narrative at first but upon further listen, a theme of survival seems to emerge, not just making it out alive, but coming out on top despite what horrors the world may hurl at you. This could be argues as the over-all them of John’s work in general. He often references his own struggles to survive his childhood, and his past in general. It’s often hard to imagine someone as unassuming as John being a bit of a drug addled hell raiser. He gives off in person the air of someone who has spent more time in the library than in the dope house, but it just goes to show that you can’t tell a book by its cover. The lyrics he composes have always belied his appearance and made clear that he has been to hell and back!
The title of the album is a reference to Tarot cards which those of us who grew up in the early nineties and were also obsessed with The Invisibles know all to well. The bonus tape is called All Survivors Pack. Which features a song that taught us the name of Billy the Kids mom. A bit of trivia we can’t wait to break out. We’ve yet to get hold of a tape player to listen to this masterpiece, but thankfully some tech savoy TMG -Head (I’m not sure what we call ourselves), placed it on-line already so we can hear whats in our hand without playing it (go Bless the future)! While listening to it with 24-hour cable news running in the background makes us think of Japan, Earthquakes, and the fact that we’ve moved our HQ right in the heart of it. Truthfully this has been on our minds for the last year, but it all comes together cohesively while under the influence of John Darnielle’s soothing, nasal voice! We started thinking about why we have yet to put together a survivors pack of our own. I man we have a bag ready to go in case we need to do something involving costumes, fireworks or rope, but none for if the earth breaks apart and tries to swallow us whole.
